Campus and its location

Situated in one of the most beautiful out-skirts of Karkala about a K.M. from the town, the College has an atmosphere quite congenial for studies and inviting for a worthy living away from the buzz of the town. The picturesque natural surroundings pulsating with the dynamic and positive spirit of an ashram of the days that have gone by, make this place an ideal center for university education.

About Karkala

Karkala is a historical place rich in culture and heritage, with India’s most beautiful second big Monolithic statue of Bahubali (Gomateshwara). The name ‘Karkala’ is said to have originated from two words “Kari” and “Kallu” which in vernacular mean “Black” and “Stone”. Rightly, Karkala is endowed with rich rocky mounds and vast granite sheets. Man and nature have meticulously carved out a picturesque township rich with cultural and architectural heritage such as Chaturmukha (four-faced) Basadi, Manastambha at Hiriangadi, Ananthashayana shrine – all works of art on granite. Ramasamudra, the perennial lake, Anekere, a smaller one, in the heart of the town. Along with pristine landscape all around, it is an enchanting place with a population of nearly 35000.

Placed in between Mangalore (55 Kms) and Manipal- Udupi (39 Kms), Karkala has a strategic location with a vast network of roads connecting various places of interest like Agumbe, Kudremukh, Sringeri, Moodbidri, and Dharmasthala.

Sri Bhuvanendra College

A great center for higher education in Karkala Sri Bhuvanendra College was established in the year 1960 with the generous donation of an inspiring and pious campus ‘Sri Srinivasa Ashram’ – an area of 17 acres to promote the cause of education by Karkala Sri Venkatramana Temple, also known as Paduthirupathi Venkataramana temple.

Srnivasashrama was established in 1924. It founded a reputed Sanskrit college in 1942 to disseminate Sanskrit education and was managed by Sri Venkatramana Temple Education Trust and Vyasa Raghupati Fund ( Vaidyashala Fund).   Sanskrit college offered degrees in Jyothishya, Ayurveda, Sahitya Shiromani which was recognized by Madras University.  It was so reputed that students from far and wide came here for Sanskrit scholarship. But after independence with the advent of modern secular education, this Sanskrit Vidyapeeth lost its shine and by 1960 it found no students to seek admission for Sanskrit studies.  So the elders and enthusiastic citizens of Karkala hoped to turn this center of Sanskrit learning into a citadel of modern higher education.

During those years the then undivided district of South Canara saw the rise of a visionary named Dr. T.M.A. Pai who had resolved to better the lives of people of this region through institutions of education, industrialization, banking and health services.  He had already formed the Academy of General Education in 1948 and had offered to associate with philanthropists and elders of the South Canara district to establish institutions of higher education in different regions of the district. Philanthropists of Karkala like Sri Mukunda Prabhu and Sri Vasudeva Kamath approached Dr. T. M. A. Pai requesting his leadership and also for the sponsorship from the Academy. Their efforts bore fruit in the form of Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala which came into being in 1960.

The College was founded in the name of Shrimath Bhuvanendra Thirtha – the seventeenth Swamiji of Shree Kashi Math who was a great ascetic and great scholar of Dwaita Vedanta, Dharma Shastra, Agama Shastra, Jyotisha, Ayurveda, Mantra Shastra, Shilpa Shastra, etc. He was also noted for the depth of his knowledge and for the observance of religious rules.

The man who was appointed to steer this institution as the first Principal was to become a legend in his lifetime – Prof. K. D. Kini. His long service enabled the institution to become a center of par excellence. Sri Bhuvanendra College has celebrated its decennial, silver jubilee, and golden jubilee in a very befitting manner.
